Are you planning a family trip to Amsterdam? Look no further! When we visited Amsterdam in winter 2022 for a weekend getaway, we discovered that it is a vibrant and kid-friendly city. With its numerous cultural and historical sites, outdoor adventures and fun activities, Amsterdam is the perfect destination for family vacations. In this blog post, we'll share some insider tips and tricks to help you make the most of your visit to Amsterdam with your kids.

The van Wonderen Stroopwafels are not just delicious but the cute, little shop is a must-see aswell.

  1. Visit the Museums
One of the must-visit attractions is the Van Gogh Museum, which is perfect for art-loving families. During our trip, we took the kids to see some of the world's most famous art and artifacts, and it was a truly special experience. The museum was particularly meaningful for Emmet, who had learned about Van Gogh in his art school and Laila who had painted her own version of "Wheatfield with Crows" before.
The NEMO Science Museum is supposed to be a great place to visit, too, as it offers interactive exhibits on science and technology that are both educational and entertaining.

  2. Explore the Canals
Amsterdam's canals are a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the city's most iconic attractions. Take a canal tour with your kids to see the city from a different perspective and learn entertaining stories from local guides. You can also rent a boat or pedal boat and explore the canals at your own pace - in winter we preferred to stay warm and dry on a canal cruise.

  3. Indulge in Dutch Treats
No trip to Amsterdam is complete without trying some of the city's delicious food. Your kids will love the traditional Dutch pancakes (pannenkoeken) which come in sweet and savory varieties. Stroopwafels (a type of Dutch cookie) and bitterballen (deep-fried meatballs) are also popular snacks that your kids will enjoy.

  4. Take a Bike Ride
Biking is a popular mode of transportation in Amsterdam - which you can not overlook - and it's also a fun way to explore the city with your family. Rent bikes and cycle around the city, taking in the sights and sounds. We actually gave ourself the challenge of taking photos with the most beautifully decorated bicycles - the “Flower Bike Man” gives you plenty of opportunities!

  5. Stroll along the Bloemenmarkt
This Flower market is a colorful and fragrant place that is an integral part of the city's history and culture. Located along the Singel Canal, the market is the only floating flower market in the world. It has been in existence for more than 150 years and is a popular tourist attraction that draws thousands of visitors every year. An impressive array of fresh flowers, bulbs, and seeds, with tulips being the star of the show can be found here but think twice whether you really expect everything from traditional Dutch tulips to rare and exotic blooms from around the world to grow in your garden. The market is open year-round so visitors can enjoy the beautiful colors and fragrances no matter what season you visit. In addition the market also has a range of souvenirs and gifts on offer. You can purchase a wide variety of tulip-themed souvenirs, including clogs, magnets, and postcards. We brought home some delicious cheese for the grandparents and ourselves to enjoy.

  6. Experience Nature
While Amsterdam is a bustling city, there are plenty of opportunities to get outside and enjoy nature. We took a walk in Vondelpark which is a popular spot for families with beautiful gardens, bike paths and playgrounds.

In conclusion, Amsterdam is a city that is perfect for family vacations. With its many museums, canals, parks and outdoor adventures, there is no shortage of things to do and see. Follow these tips, and you'll be sure to have an unforgettable trip with your kids to this beautiful city.
