Visiting Denmark with Kids: Relaxation close by
In 2018 we went on vacation in Denmark, our neighbouring country, and we can say first-hand: with its friendly people, charming towns and stunning natural scenery Denmark offers plenty of opportunities for both parents and children to relax and have fun. If you're looking for a destination that's both easy-going and adventurous, Denmark should be on your list. Here are some tips for a stress-free vacation in the land of “Hygge”.
Choose The Right Destination
Denmark has a lot of great destinations for families, so it's important to choose one that suits your interests and needs. Copenhagen is a popular choice, with its world-famous amusement park Tivoli Gardens, the Copenhagen Zoo, and many museums and cultural attractions. Aarhus is another great option, with its interactive museums and family-friendly beaches. If you're looking for something more rural, consider visiting the island of Bornholm, which has plenty of outdoor activities, such as cycling and hiking, as well as charming towns and beaches.
We stayed in a holiday home in Lønstrup near the sea because we were looking for some seclusion and nature.Embrace The Danish Concept Of Hygge
Hygge (pronounced "hoo-ga") is a Danish concept that's all about coziness, comfort, and togetherness. It's a great mindset to adopt when traveling with kids, as it encourages you to slow down, enjoy the moment, and focus on the little things that make life enjoyable. Embrace hygge by staying in a cozy cabin or cottage, enjoying warm drinks and comforting food, and spending quality time with your family without worrying too much about schedules or itineraries. I actually read more books in this one week than in the last six months before and fell asleep a few times in a rocking chair on the patio while the kids enjoyed freely playing in a gigantic garden.
Visit The Beach
Denmark has over 7,000 kilometers of coastline, which means there's no shortage of beaches to explore. Many of them are family-friendly, with shallow waters and soft sand, perfect for building sandcastles and paddling in the water. Some of the best beaches for families include Skagen Beach, Henne Strand, and Gilleleje Strand. We felt lucky to have had the “Lønstrup strand og klit” almost for ourselves.
Visit A Theme Park
Denmark is home to some of the best theme parks in Europe, and they're perfect for families with kids of all ages. Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen is the most famous, with its beautiful gardens, thrilling rides, and live entertainment. LEGOLAND in Billund is another popular choice which we had actually considered visiting but our pug Balou would have not really enjoyed the LEGO-themed attractions and rides so we saved that one for later. Other theme parks in Denmark include Djurs Sommerland, Fårup Sommerland, and BonBon-Land.
Explore The Great Outdoors
Denmark has plenty of natural beauty to explore, from national parks and forests to lakes and rivers. Take a hike through the Mols Bjerge National Park, go bird-watching at the Wadden Sea National Park, or rent a canoe and explore the lakes and rivers of central Jutland. There are plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventure in Denmark, and it's a great way to get some fresh air and exercise while enjoying the stunning scenery. One of our favorite little adventures was a walk up the sand dunes to lighthouse “Rubjerg Knude Fyr”. Even though it was quite windy up there, the view is breathtaking.

Denmark is a fantastic destination for families with kids of all ages. With its friendly people, relaxed atmosphere, and stunning natural scenery, it offers plenty of opportunities for both adventure and relaxation. Whether you're looking to explore the countryside, hit the beach, or indulge in some hygge, Denmark has something for everyone. So pack your bags, grab your family, and get ready for a stress-free, relaxing adventure in one of Europe's most family-friendly destinations.
