Turkey - Alpay’s Roots
I was born and raised in Germany but my parents come from Turkey.
Turkey is a country steeped in rich history, diverse cultures, and stunning natural beauty. With its blend of traditional values and modern innovation, it has captured the hearts and imaginations of countless people from all over the world.
For those of us with ancestry in Turkey, the connection to this vibrant country goes beyond the surface level of appreciation. Our roots run deep and shape who we are as individuals, influencing our values, beliefs and perspectives. It is a connection that transcends time and geography, and one that we carry with us wherever we go.
Growing up, I spent every summer either in the hills of Anatolia or playing soccer with neighbors in the streets of Antalya. It was during that time that I realized the unequal distribution of wealth, as I saw many of my friends lack the same opportunities that my family was able to provide for me. So Turkey is the place where I learned to share what I had and where I understood what hospitality means. I have vivid memories of my mother cooking traditional Turkish dishes for many, singing songs passed down from generation to generation, and sharing tales of her own childhood in the countryside. With my father I went swimming in the Mediterranean Sea and he got me interested in music.
Taking my children to Turkey today is a way for me to offer them a glimpse into my heritage and allow them to understand me on a deeper level. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore my roots, for example by visiting the ancient ruins of Ephesus, taking in the breathtaking views from the hills of Cappadocia or simply enjoying a good cup of Turkish tea with family. The experiences we have had in Turkey have brought our family closer together, touched our hearts and opened our eyes to the beauty and richness of this gorgeous place of personal significance.
Here are a few destinations in Turkey that we have visited as a family and that we can recommend:
Istanbul: this vibrant metropolis is too big for one continent so bring time to explore the special atmosphere with bazaars, history, shopping and so many incredibly friendly people
Antalya: if you are looking for a place to relax, Antalya is the place to be at the Mediterranean Sea. It’s inexpensive, offers many park areas, great shopping opportunities and seems to be made for families.
Cappadocia: unique landscape for hiking, hot air balloon rides every day and underground cities - do you need anything else for an adventure?
In conclusion, having roots in Turkey is a journey that is both personal and universal, one that has the power to inspire and connect people from all walks of life. Whether you are Turkish or simply have an appreciation for the country, its culture, and its people, there is something deeply moving about experiencing Turkey for yourself. So, if you have the opportunity, I encourage you to explore your own roots and immerse yourself in the beauty and wonder of this truly special place.
