South Africa

South Africa is a country that promises an incredible experience for any traveler, whether it's for a foreign study program or a family vacation. With its stunning natural landscapes, fascinating culture and complex history it's a destination that offers a unique and unforgettable travel experience. Andrea had the opportunity to explore a lot of this beautiful country during her foreign study semester in 2007 - when we did not have any kids yet. However, whether you're a seasoned traveler or a first-timer, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure that you make the most of your time there. In this blog post, we'll provide you with some tips for traveling in South Africa.

When traveling to South Africa, you can anticipate a range of experiences, including exciting safari adventures, vibrant city escapades in Cape Town, and rich historical insights. Speaking from my six-month stay in Potchefstroom, home to the North-West University (NWU), I can confidently attest to the possibilities.

I fondly recall the awe-inspiring landscapes of the Drakensberg Mountains, the scenic Garden Route, and the picturesque beaches in Durban. Safari expeditions are available in various national parks and private game reserves, with my personal favorite being Kruger National Park, which houses the renowned "Big Five" (lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and buffalos). Although it doesn't quite compare to Tanzania, I highly recommend extending your journey to Botswana, Zimbabwe, or Zambia.

What made South Africa stand out to me was the enriching cultural experience. Making friends with people from different cultural backgrounds (African, European, and Asian) gave me a unique opportunity to gain insight into their beliefs. Although I wasn't able to bring all of them together, I learned the importance of acceptance and tolerance. If you ever visit South Africa, it's crucial to educate yourself about the country's complex and turbulent history, shaped by colonization, apartheid, and the fight for democracy. Must-see attractions include Robben Island near Cape Town, the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, and the Mandela House in Soweto.

Before embarking on your travels, here are my top three tips to help you maximize your time in this stunning country.

  1. Plan your itinerary carefully
South Africa is a vast country with a vast amount of sights and activities to explore. To make the most of your time there, create a list of the places you wish to visit and plan your route accordingly.

  2. Be mindful of safety
While I had an overwhelmingly positive experience during my six-month stay, some of my fellow students did fall victim to theft and robbery. Therefore, it's essential to exercise caution when exploring. Stick to well-lit areas at night, avoid carrying large amounts of cash or valuables and be wary when using public transportation. Additionally, it's wise to stay up to date on local news and travel advisories.

  3. Indulge in the local cuisine
South African food is a delicious blend of African, Indian, and European flavors. Be sure to sample some of the traditional dishes such as bobotie (a spicy minced meat dish), biltong (dried meat), and boerewors (a type of sausage). And if you're invited to a braai, that's a local barbecue, so be prepared for a tasty feast!😋

In conclusion, whether you're studying or traveling in South Africa, it has the potential to be a truly enriching and unforgettable experience. We can’t wait to take the kids there, too, because we know that they will enjoy this breathtaking destination and some of the most welcoming people on earth. You can make the most of your time by carefully planning your itinerary, prioritizing safety, indulging in the local cuisine, encountering the diverse wildlife and exploring the complex history.
